THE WORLD DAY OF THE POOR
DES PAUVRES

Organize a World Day of the Poor

“In the light of the “Jubilee of Socially Excluded Persons”, when in all the cathedrals and shrines of the world the Doors of Mercy were closing, I had the intuition that, as the last concrete sign of this Extraordinary Holy Year, We had to celebrate throughout the Church, the XXXIIIth Sunday in Ordinary Time, World Day of the Poor. This will be the best preparation for living the solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe, who identified himself with the small and the poor and who will judge us on the works of mercy (cf. Mt 25,31-46). It will be a day that will help communities and every baptized person to reflect on how poverty is at the heart of the Gospel and on the fact that, as long as Lazarus lives at the door of our house (cf. Lk 16:19-21), there can be no justice or social peace. This Day will also be an authentic form of new evangelization. (cf. Mt 11:5) through which the face of the Church will be renewed in her continuous action of pastoral conversion in order to be a witness to mercy.”

The beginnings of the association

Étienne Villemain and Alix Montagne have the intuition that the poor have their place at the heart of the Church and not at its door. They organize a pilgrimage to Rome with 200 street people. During the general audience with the Pope, they asked him to establish a “World Day of the Poor.”

2016
The creation of Fratello

In November 2016, Fratello brought together 3,500 people from 23 countries in Rome for three days of meetings and prayer, punctuated by an audience with the Pope. On November 20, at the end of the Jubilee of Mercy, Pope Francis established the World Day of the Poor, celebrated every year on the 33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time.

In November 2021, 500 people in a precarious situation, including 200 invited by Fratello, lived a pilgrimage to Assisi in the footsteps of Saint Francis, in the spirit of Fratelli tutti. Pope Francis was invited to join as a “poor pilgrim with the poor.” In parallel, some sixty gatherings took place on all continents, united by a live international prayer time.
